Our Approach

Juniors Judo

At Northampton Judo Club, we believe that the best learning happens when children are having fun. That’s why we’ve designed engaging and enjoyable tasks that not only teach the techniques of Judo but also foster self-defense instincts and instill important values such as friendship, respect, and fair play.

Each activity is carefully crafted by our experienced coaches to enhance your child’s cognitive thinking, emotional well-being, and physical development. By combining play with structured learning, we aim to create a positive and supportive environment where children can thrive, build confidence, and develop skills that will benefit them both on and off the mat.

Juniors Judo

learning values with fun

Judo is a great way for your child to learn self-defence and a positive approach towards sports. Not only that, but also to develop emotionally and socially.

Responsibility

At Northampton Judo Club, we prioritize teaching your child to take responsibility for their own health and safety, as well as the well-being of others. In the early lessons, we focus on teaching proper falling techniques to ensure that your child can train safely and avoid injuries. Only once they are confident in their ability to fall correctly do we begin introducing throwing techniques.
Our coaches take an individualized approach, ensuring that each child is given the attention and guidance they need to feel confident in their movements. We work closely with each student to develop their skills at their own pace, ensuring they are both capable and comfortable as they progress in their Judo journey.

Knowledge

The word Judo translates to "gentle way," reflecting its principles of balance, control, and mutual respect. Central to Judo’s philosophy are the mottos "Jita-Kyoei" (Mutual Benefit) and "Seiryoku-Zenyo" (Maximum Efficiency with Minimum Effort), which guide the way practitioners approach not only the sport but life itself.
At Northampton Judo Club, we make a concerted effort to expand your child’s knowledge of their physical abilities, helping them develop strength, agility, and coordination. Beyond physical skills, we also emphasize the deeper philosophy of Judo, encouraging flexibility, adaptability, and a mindful approach to challenges. Through these teachings, we aim to instill a holistic understanding of Judo that goes far beyond the dojo, helping children apply these values in their everyday lives.

Fair Play

At Northampton Judo Club, we place great importance on following the rules and philosophy of Judo, with a strong emphasis on respecting opponents. We believe that respect and self-control are integral to the practice of Judo. Much like bees, which only sting when provoked, we teach our students that conflict should be avoided, and aggression should not be the first response.
We guide your children to understand that Judo is not about attacking others, but rather about using their acquired skills for self-defense and to protect those around them. Through this approach, we help instill values of discipline, respect, and responsibility, ensuring that children learn how to use their abilities wisely and ethically, both on and off the mat.

Responsibility

During judo classes, we teach your kid to be responsible for their health and others. Throughout the first lessons, we will instruct every child how to fall properly to avoid injuries before we start implementing throwing techniques. Our judo coaches approach every kid individually and make sure that students are confident with movements and properly skilled.

Knowledge

The word judo translates to gentle way and the motto it holds is “Jita-Kyoei” – Mutual Benefit” and “Seiryoku-Zenyo – Maximum efficiency with minimum effort”. We make an effort in expanding your kids’ knowledge and understanding of their physical abilities but also implement the philosophy of flexibility and life approach that judo teaches.

Fair Play

Following the rules and philosophy of judo and respecting opponents is very important in our club. Bees won't sting you unless bothered and as Judokas, we follow the same path. We teach your children never to attack but to use their gained skills in self-defence and defence of others.

Discipline

Judo focuses on correct techniques and individual skills rather than on strength and is a wonderful way to teach children a healthy attitude about sports in general. At Northampton Judo Club we teach your kids about the code of behaviour and respect while creating fun tasks and games.

Respect

Judo helps in developing balanced and healthy emotional hygiene. It’s focused on respect and trust towards the teacher, opponents but also self-respect. By practising judo your kid will develop a healthy response to failure and courtesy towards others and themselves.

Friendship

Our Judo Community is focused on creating a friendly and encouraging environment for your kids. The classes are focused on implementing fun and engaging games while adapting judo technics. We promote team work, respect towards others and confidence in each student.

Discipline

At Northampton Judo Club, we emphasize the importance of correct techniques and individual skills rather than relying on physical strength. Judo is an excellent way to teach children a healthy attitude toward sports, focusing on discipline, respect, and the idea that success comes from skill and technique, not sheer force.
We teach your children the code of behavior and respect that is central to Judo, helping them understand how these values apply both in and outside the dojo. To make learning enjoyable, we incorporate fun tasks and games that reinforce these principles, creating an engaging environment where children can grow, build confidence, and develop a love for the sport.

Respect

Judo is not only beneficial for physical development but also plays a key role in fostering balanced and healthy emotional hygiene. At Northampton Judo Club, we emphasize the importance of respect and trust—towards the teacher, opponents, and most importantly, toward oneself.
Through the practice of Judo, your child will learn how to manage their emotions, develop a healthy response to failure, and approach challenges with perseverance and a positive mindset. Judo also teaches courtesy and self-respect, helping children build confidence while maintaining humility and consideration for others. These values extend far beyond the dojo, shaping your child’s emotional resilience and interpersonal relationships in all areas of life.

How will your child benefit
from judo?

While practicing Judo at Northampton Judo Club, your child will develop not only physically but also mentally and socially. Judo’s philosophy teaches the importance of flexibility, a quality that extends beyond the mat and can be applied in every aspect of life.
Our focus is to help your child develop overall fitness and self-defense skills, while also working to improve their focus and discipline. Through Judo, we encourage a positive attitude towards teamwork and a healthy response to failure, helping children learn how to face challenges with resilience and perseverance. These invaluable life skills will support your child’s growth and confidence, both in and outside of the dojo.

Judo and physical health of your child:

Judo is an exceptional choice of exercise for your child, as it helps build healthy, strong muscles from an early age. Beyond muscle development, Judo incorporates cardio exercises, which improve heart health, boost stamina, and can even help lower cholesterol levels.
Children who participate in Judo enjoy a reduced risk of childhood obesity, heart problems, and osteoporosis, thanks to its full-body workout that promotes overall health. Additionally, Judo fosters a friendly approach towards movement, making physical activity fun and engaging. This creates a solid foundation for your child to grow into a healthy, active adult who understands and values the importance of physical fitness in maintaining a balanced lifestyle.

Can judo improve the emotional health of your child?

Judo is a martial art that instills the values of respect — not just towards the teacher and opponents, but also, and most importantly, towards oneself. At Northampton Judo Club, we embrace the philosophy of the ‘gentle way’, which is at the core of Judo. This philosophy teaches students to give way and use the movements of their opponents skillfully, rather than relying on force to win.
Judo also promotes a healthy and respectful approach to facing failure, encouraging resilience and a growth mindset. Our coaches are dedicated to creating an environment where your child can thrive, build trust, confidence, and develop new friendships. These experiences nurture their courage and judgment, helping them grow into balanced, emotionally healthy young adults who understand the importance of respect, discipline, and perseverance.

Judo and aggression issues:

Training in Judo provides your child with an excellent outlet for their energy while also helping to discourage violent behaviour. At Northampton Judo Club, our coaches emphasize the importance of respecting others, paying attention to details, and cultivating self-acceptance.
We create an environment where children feel safe to express their emotions without fear of judgment, and we encourage them to manage their emotions in healthy, constructive ways. We strongly discourage aggressive behavior and teach our students to avoid involvement in bullying or fights. Instead, we focus on using their self-defense skills in appropriate situations, such as protecting themselves and others who may be in need. Through Judo, children learn the value of empathy, respect, and responsibility, shaping them into compassionate, confident individuals.

Can judo increase the concentration of children?

Studies have shown that children who are hyperactive or suffer from attention deficit disorders can greatly benefit from the disciplined environment that Judo provides. At Northampton Judo Club, your child will learn detailed movements and follow specific instructions from our experienced coaches, which helps them develop critical skills in focus and attention to detail.
These skills not only improve their performance in Judo but also translate to better concentration and engagement in other areas of life, such as school and later in their professional careers. By learning to follow instructions and stay focused on tasks, your child will build a foundation that supports academic success and personal growth, making Judo a powerful tool for enhancing both their mental and physical development.
